Teaching Tips of the Week
March 5, 2006
|

In this weekly column, we offer teacher-tested techniques and tips.

Communication Folder

Keep a brightly colored folder on your desk labled Communications. Here is where you put all the papers, memos, notes, catalogs, etc. that you find in your mailbox. When you have a moment or two, dip into the file and take care of what you can. At the end of the week, go through the folder and file, respond to, or discard the rest.

Trade and Grade

For classwork that is fairly simple to grade (e.g. multiple choice or true and false work), have students "trade and grade" papers. Go over each answer. Tell the students to mark an "X" by anything that is wrong and write in the correct answer. Students get immediate feeback and you do not have to grade all the papers yourself.

Thankfulness

Create a bulletin board in the teacher's lounge where faculty and staff and post "Thankful Notes." Provide a box of blank notes and coloful pens. You may want to title the board "I Am Thankful For . . . "

Providing Instructions

If a lesson requires detailed instructions (that you do not want to have to repeat a dozen times), write the instructions on a transparency and put it on the overhead. Students can review the instructions as often as they need.

Class Scribe

Assign a student to act as the class scribe. That person will write on the board when necessary, take notes, make lists, etc.

Study Questions

Instead of simply assigning text to read as homework, assign instead questions to be answered. This gives students a purpose for reading and can enhance their comprehension.

Student-Created Rubrics

When possible, brainstorm with students to create a rubric for an assignment. Students will have a better understanding of what is expected of them.
