Teaching Tips of the Week
February 26, 2006
|

In this weekly column, we offer teacher-tested techniques and tips.

Silent Signal for Help

When your students are working at computers, give them a red plastic cup that they can put atop the computer monitor to signal for help. That way the students do not have to raise their hands and can keep working until you arrive.

Parent Communication Log

Create a binder with A-Z dividers. Create one page for each student and place that page in the binder by the student's last name. When you call a parent, make a note of the date called, reason for call, and outcome. This way you can tell at a glance when you called and what was discussed.

Thank You!

When a parent has helped out on a field trip or during class, instead of you writing the thank you note, have the students do it. You can have each student write a comment, or simply sign his or her name.

Quiet Zone

You can create a simple, portable "office" or "quiet zone" for a student by placing a three-panel display board (used for science fair projects) on top of a desk or table.

Question Reminders

In order to remind yourself to ask high-level questions that promote critical thinking, print question stems on sheets of paper in a large font that can be seen at a distance. Place these on the wall that you face when you are teaching. Example: How would you justify . . . ? Would it be better if . . . ? What is your opinion of . . . ? What evidence can you find . . . ? How is ____ related to ____?
