Great Fire of London. Anniversary. On this day in 1666, a fire broke out in the house and shop of Thomas Farynor, King Charles II's baker. It eventually spread, and continued burning until September 6, when it was finally extinguished. The fire destroying nearly four-fifths of London. For more information go here and here. Japan Surrenders. Anniversary. On this day in 1945, Japan officially and unconditionally surrendered to the Allies, thus ending World War II.

Christa McAuliffe. Anniversary of Birth. Born September 2, 1948; Died January 28, 1986 when the Challenger shuttle exploded after launch at the Kennedy Space Center. She was to be the first teacher in space. For a brief biography, go here.

First Continental Congress Convenes. On this day in 1774, the first session of the Continental Congress convened at Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia.

First Circumnavigation of the Globe. One of Magellan's ship's, the Vittoria, arrived in Sanlýcar de Barrameda, Spain, thus completing the first circumnavigation of the world.

Marquis De Lafayette. Anniversary of Birth. Born September 6, 1757; Died 1834. A French soldier who fought with George Washington in the Revolutionary War.

Grandma Moses Day. Anna Mary Robertson Moses, a painter, is one of America's most famous folk artists.

Irish Potato Famine. Anniversary. Began in 1846 and lasted until 1850. It is estimated that as many as one million died as a result of the famine. Terrorists Attacks on the United States. Anniversary. On this day in 2001, Islamic terrorists crashed planes into the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. On this day in 1814, Francis Scott Key composed the lyrics to the song after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, in Maryland, during the War of 1812.

Citizenship Day. Its purpose is to commemorate the formation and signing on September 17, 1787, of the Constitution and recognizes all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens. Citizenship Day was signed into law by President Harry Truman on this day in 1952.

Jim Henson. Anniversary of Birth. Born September 24, 1936; Died May 16, 1990. Henson was a puppeteer, filmmaker, and television producer. Henson was the creator of the The Muppets. The Jim Henson Company created the original characters from Sesame Street.

Muhammad's Hegira. The Islamic prophet Muhammad completed his Hegira (flight) from Mecca to Yathrib (later renamed Medina) in order to escape persecution. There, Muhammad preached and organized an Islamic community. This date is considered the beginning of the Muslim calendar. For more information, go here.

First Female Supreme Court Justice Sworn In. Anniversary.
On this day in 1981, Sandra Day O'Connor became the first female justice. On July 1, 2005 she announced that she was retiring. A complete mini-unit with plans for grades 4-5 may be found here.
