Lesson Author: Beth McKinlay

Lesson Title: Study Skills Assignment

Subject: All

Grade Levels: 5-12

Overview: This assignment gives students practice in six different types of study skills as they review material for a final exam. The students are well prepared for the exam because they receive guidance (and marks) for the studying process.

Materials:

  • text book

  • notebook

Procedure:

Tell students:
  1. Your assignment is to use a variety of study techniques to prepare for the exam. I hope that you will benefit from this assignment in two ways:

    • an improved result on your exam;
    • an opportunity to familiarize yourself with different study techniques tha you can use in other classes, and in your future.

  2. You will be given two days in class to work on this assignment. This will not be enough time to complete this work, so prepare to spend time outside of class.

  3. This assignment is worth 10% of your final mark. Failure to complete this assignment will have a strong, negative impact on your mark.

  4. Your study notes must be handwritten; no photocopies, or computer-generated work.

  5. Do not hand in notes removed from your notebook—please summarize them. Your textbook should also be very useful to you. (Note to teachers:  I provide a list of due dates and chapters or units they will focus on. I also ask the students to show this assignment to their parents.)

  6. You will use the following types of study skills:

    • Summary notes - summarize the main points of 6 sections of the text
    • Questions and Answers - make up 20 questions, or redo 20 questions
    • Diagrams -  Draw 6 diagrams
    • Flashcards - make 25 flashcards of vocabulary from this course
    • Venn Diagrams - compare and contrast 12 terms or concepts
    • Concept maps - draw six concept maps to summarize six concepts from the course

The study notes are evaluated for neatness, organization (hand in each type of study notes together) and thoroughness (include all the main points for each section covered).

Teacher Comment: I require the students to complete the Table of Contents. It makes marking a breeze.
