Zoran Milich’s City A B C is a book that we constantly recommend to teachers looking for an unusual and vibrant alphabet book. We were delighted then to see that Milich has created a counting book in the same style.

City 1 2 3 begins with "1" young man standing still with his back to us in front of a blurred, moving crowd and ends with "10" small french fries on a clean, white plate.

Each number is featured on a double-paged spread. On the left-hand page readers see a line of numerals from 1 to 10, under which is found the appropriate number of large, red dots to count. Below that is the number spelled out in large, black letters. On the right-hand page one finds Milich’s photographs, showing, for example, two yellow cabs, three truck tires, and so forth.

As with City A B C, this book includes lots of white space and vivid, colorful pictures. The cityscape, we see, is an energetic, interesting place in which to learn letters as well as numbers.

Highly recommended.
