In this wonderful survey, Wade Hudson introduces readers to men and women such as anthropologist Johnnetta Cole, aviator Bessie Coleman, astronomer Benjamin Banneker, and pioneer transplant surgeon Samuel K. Kountz.
Each one-page entry includes an illustration and biographical information. The author weaves anecdotes, facts, and quotes into an inspirational story for each of these heroic individuals.
Herein, for example, we find the story of Susie King Taylor, a courageous civil war nurse who became the first Black army nurse to serve her country. Not only did she nurse the soldiers, she taught them to read and write as well.
This well-researched and solidly written text includes a chronology, glossary, and an index, making this a useful reference book as well as an excellent introduction to a group of men and women who truly made a difference in their respective fields.
Highly recommended.
