Book Review

In this board book babies have the opportunity to explore visually and tactilely circles, squares, and triangles. The concept is simple; the execution, brilliant.

For the very young, the book begins with a round snail whose house is a high-contrast, black-and-white bulls-eye pattern. (Infants, as you may know, cannot distinguish between pastel patterns and even have problems with some primary colors.) We then move into a round window (cut-out) which leads into round trees and a round bear.

The square shape is next, beginning with square windows then square train cars. The final shape is the triangle. A boy with a triangle hat smiles out at the reader. Next comes a triangle window, a triangle mountain, and finally the boy with the triangle hat peeking out of the window of a house with a bright-red triangle roof.

The final double-page spread includes all the elements the reader has been introduced to in the book.
